Algerian military checkpoint attacked, one dead

(Reuters) - ALGIERS, Aug 23 (Reuters) - A military serviceman was killed and two officers were injured in an attack on a military checkpoint in Algeria on Tuesday, a security source said.

The attack took place around Taouarga village in the Bourmedes province, which lies east of the capital Algiers.

The source said the assault occurred at 7.40 p.m. (1840 GMT). It was not immediately clear what kind of an attack it was.

Algeria, an energy exporter in North Africa, is still emerging from nearly two decades of conflict between security forces and Islamist militant groups that, at its peak in the 1990s, killed an estimated 200,000 people.

Al Qaeda's North African wing last week claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing on a local police headquarters in the town of Tizi Ouzou this month that officials said injured 29 people.
