Ivory Coast: 3 French nationals arrested, released

An Ivory Coast official says authorities have freed three French nationals who were arrested over the weekend.

Military spokesman Lt. Jean-Marc Tago refused to elaborate Monday on the circumstances of their arrest.

A diplomat who asked not to be named because she is not authorized to speak to journalists said the French Embassy in Abidjan negotiated their release. Two of the men were freed Saturday. The third was released Sunday.

Human rights groups have documented dozens of cases of abuse, including arbitrary detentions, by the country's de facto army. That force toppled strongman Laurent Gbagbo in April to install the country's democratically elected leader.
