Jailed Mexican ex-guv faces charges in baby deaths

The chief prosecutor in Mexico's Chiapas state says a former governor jailed on suspicion of embezzlement will also face manslaughter charges involving the hospital deaths of at least 30 newborns.

Chiapas Attorney General Raziel Lopez alleges former Gov. Pablo Salazar failed to act when a bacteria spread through a regional hospital in Comitan.

He says a judge has decided to charge Salazar with manslaughter for the 2002-2003 deaths of two babies and with negligence in the deaths of 31 other newborns.

Lopez alleged Thursday that the 56-year-old Salazar knew about the bacteria and did not allocate enough manpower to save the babies.

Salazar governed Chiapas between 2000 and 2006 as part of a six-party coalition.
