Papua New Guinea's parliament has elected former treasurer Peter O'Neil as the country's new prime minister.
O'Neil was elected by a vote of 70 to 24 on Tuesday. He replaces Acting Prime Minister Sam Abal.
Abal had been standing in for Prime Minister Michael Somare. Somare retired in June due to ill health 36 years after becoming the South Pacific island nation's first leader after its independence from Australia in 1975.
