Peru's outgoing President Alan Garcia has broken with tradition and opted not to attend the inauguration of Ollanta Humala.
Garcia quit Peru's presidential palace Thursday morning an hour before his leftist successor was to be sworn in before Congress.
The 62-year-old, pro-business Garcia announced several days earlier that he didn't expect to attend the inauguration. He said it wasn't out of disrespect for Humala but to prevent a recurrence of the unpleasantness of 1990, when his first term ended.
Congress erupted in catcalls when Garcia then handed over power to Alberto Fujimori. His first term had been a disaster. Peru was in the throes of hyperinflation and bleeding from a fanatical leftist insurgency.
