Authorities in southern China are investigating the beating death of a disabled peddler that sparked a violent protest in the latest outbreak of anger over perceived bullying by officials.

A notice posted Wednesday on the Anshun city government website said city government and Communist Party committee leaders had demanded a speedy inquiry into the cause of the unrest and legal action against those responsible.

State media reports said about 30 protesters and 10 policemen were injured in Tuesday's incident, but gave no word on arrests. That followed the death of 52-year-old Deng Qiguo after he was assaulted by members of the "chengguan," or urban management corps, a police auxiliary unit notorious for corruption and violence against small businesses and the poor.
