British forces in Afghanistan have detained two U.K. citizens for questioning, officials said Thursday.
The Ministry of Defense said two British passport holders _ a man and a woman _ were arrested last week in a joint U.K.-Afghan operation. The two are currently being held in a secure facility in Kandahar for questioning, it said in a statement. No further information will be released at the moment, the ministry said.
The Foreign Office said embassy staff were providing assistance.
British media reports offered differing accounts of what led to the arrests _ some saying the two were suspected of fighting for the Taliban while others claimed the individuals may have been planning attacks in Britain.
