The U.S. military says an American soldier has died in Iraq in a noncombat incident.
The statement Monday from U.S. forces in Iraq says the soldier died in central Iraq a day earlier but gave no further details.
The soldier was not identified pending notification of next of kin.
The death brings to 4,474 the number of American troops who have died in Iraq since the war started in 2003. That's according to an Associated Press count.
It's the fifth soldier to die in Iraq so far this month, but the first in a noncombat incident.
