North Korea reports damage, deaths from heavy rain

North Korea says heavy rains have flooded farmland, destroyed homes and caused some deaths.

The Korean Central News Agency reported Saturday that rainfall hit several provinces from Tuesday through Friday.

The report said rains drenched the city of Hamhung on Thursday and Friday "leaving dwelling houses destroyed and causing casualties." The agency says rains also destroyed roads and stopped traffic.

It also said that in one province rains submerged 24,700 acres (10,000 hectares) of farmland.

The annual summer rainy season affects both North and South Korea. But it can be a bigger problem for the North given poor drainage and deforestation.

Floods in 2007 left some 600 people dead or missing and about 100,000 others homeless.
