Would-be Guatemala mayor nabbed in rivals' deaths

Police have arrested an ex-mayoral candidate in a town outside Guatemala City on charges he ordered the murder of two rival candidates.

Fernando Marroquin was arrested Tuesday in Antigua. Rival Enrique Ovalle was gunned down in a car on June 11. Five days later Enrique Dardon was shot to death in a barber shop.

All were running for mayor of San Jose Pinula, a town of 50,000 people west of Guatemala's capital, in a Sept. 11 vote.

Interior Minister Carlos Menocal says he has ballistic evidence implicating two of Marroquin's workers. Marroquin was also attacked but Menocal says that was faked and is charging him with simulating a crime.

Officials in his party say Marroquin is no longer a candidate in the election.

Only one candidate is left on the ballot.
