Cameron pledges Afghan aid despite British pullout

British Prime Minister David Cameron is promising Afghanistan a surge in aid money even as British troops begin to withdraw from the war.

At a news conference on Tuesday with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Cameron said he will confirm to Parliament on Wednesday that about 500 of the 9,500 British forces in Afghanistan will leave next year. He says all foreign troops would stick to a 2014 deadline to end their combat role.

Cameron says an additional 450 personnel, who were deployed on a temporary mission to Afghanistan, are also set to be pulled back by February.

But he pledged an enduring partnership with Afghanistan and vowed to increase Britain's aid and help build an elite military academy modeled after England's famous Sandhurst.
