A government official in Puerto Rico is being charged with conspiracy to commit bribery involving programs that use federal funds.
Luis Calderon Rodriguez was the sub-director of the water and sewer authority in the city of Carolina on the U.S. territory. An indictment accuses him of demanding bribes from contractors in exchange for construction and maintenance contracts.
A Tuesday statement from U.S. Attorney Rosa Emilia Rodriguez says the bribe amount was about 10 percent of the contract value.
It is unclear if Calderon has a lawyer. He faces up to 10 years in prison if found guilty.
Calderon was arrested Monday and removed from his post. He had served as sub-director since July 2006.
