Iran's president calls for alliance against West

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has called for a security alliance dominated by China and Russia to form a united front against the West.

Ahmadinejad's address Wednesday to heads of state at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit being held in Kazakhstan will likely serve to deepen suspicions that the bloc is intended as a counterweight to the United States across Central Asia.

The bulk of the Iranian leader's fiery speech was devoted to leveling a series of thinly veiled accusations against unnamed Western countries, whom he described as "enslavers, colonialists (and) invaders."

The security alliance was formed in 2001 by China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan to address religious extremism and border security.
