US cites terror threat in new Philippine warning

The U.S. State Department has renewed its travel warning for the Philippines, saying terrorist attacks could occur in the restive southern region and even in the capital, Manila.

The latest travel advisory for U.S. citizens replaces a similar warning issued in November. The Philippine government has complained that such warnings fail to take into account an improving security situation.

Al-Qaida-linked militants have been blamed for bombing attacks and kidnappings in the southern Philippines, where Muslim rebels have been fighting for self-rule for decades.

Wednesday's U.S. advisory says that indiscriminate attacks also could target sites in Manila, including areas such as airports and malls.
