Red Cross: More aid needed in disasters, conflicts

The Red Cross says there is an "unprecedented" need for help among people suffering from natural disasters and bloody ongoing conflicts.

The International Committee of the Red Cross said Thursday the "demand for humanitarian assistance has reached an unprecedented level at a time when long term conflicts continue unabated."

The Geneva-based group's 2010 annual report said "the violence was primarily targeted at civilians" and fighting often has lasted two to four decades "without solutions for lasting peace."

It says most of the conflicts it dealt with were more complicated or longer-lasting than in previous years and the natural disasters like the earthquake in Haiti and flooding in Pakistan were exacerbated by violence and political instability.
