Red Cross says FARC rebels detain 140 rivergoers

The Colombian Red Cross say FARC rebels have detained more than 140 people in a northwestern jungle region who defied a guerrilla ban on travel in the region.

Colombia's police director, meanwhile, says rebels enforcing the ban killed at least three people on the Atrato river Sunday.

Gen. Oscar Naranjo said in a radio interview Tuesday that the leftist rebels have distributed pamphlets in Choco state telling people to stay off the rivers _ which are the region's main means of transport.

A local mayor tells The Associated Press that no boats are moving on the rivers. He says the rebels are marking the 47th anniversary of their May 1964 creation.

Military officials estimate the FARC has 8,000 fighters.
