BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese police said on Friday detained artist and activist Ai Weiwei's company had evaded "a huge amount" of taxes.
The Beijing Fake Cultural Development Ltd. was also found to have intentionally destroyed accounting documents, Beijing police told state news agency Xinhua, citing an initial investigation.
Police also said Ai's right to meet with people who lived with him was ensured under law while he was "under residential surveillance."
Ai was allowed to see his wife for the first time last Sunday after he was seized at Beijing's international airport on April 3, igniting an outcry about China's tightening grip on dissent.
