Tunisia lifts curfew in, near capital

Tunisia's government is lifting an overnight curfew instituted in and around the capital amid a resurgence of violence in street protests earlier this month.

The defense and interior ministries say the security situation has improved since the May 7 order for a curfew following three straight days of protests over fears that Tunisia's efforts at democracy were in jeopardy.

The ministries said in a joint statement Wednesday that a state of emergency that was ordered in the waning days of the 23-year regime of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali will remain.

Ben Ali's flight to Saudi Arabia in January amid massive street protests sparked similar upheaval across the Arab world.
