Hariri tribunal orders release of documents

A U.N.-backed tribunal investigating the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri has ordered the release of more than 270 documents to a pro-Syrian general who was jailed for nearly four years as a suspect.

Former General Security chief Maj. Gen. Jamil al-Sayyed says his "arbitrary detention" was based on false testimony and appealed to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon to release his case file so he can take legal action against those who made the allegations.

Al-Sayyed was freed in April 2009 with three other pro-Syrian Lebanese officers suspected in the 2005 truck bomb in Beirut that killed Hariri and 22 others. They were released because of a lack of evidence.

Tribunal judge Daniel Fransen ordered the documents released on Thursday.
