The pope has named veteran Vatican diplomat Archbishop Fernando Filoni to head the office overseeing the Vatican's global missionary work.
An announcement Tuesday said the Italian prelate is succeeding 75-year-old Indian Cardinal Ivan Dias, who is retiring for reason of age as head of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.
Filoni has worked in Vatican embassies in Sri Lanka, Iran, Brazil and the Philippines. He has been serving as undersecretary of state.
The Vatican said Filoni will be succeeded in that post by the papal ambassador to Cuba Archbishop Giovanni Angelo Becciu.
