A government minister has survived an attack by armed gunmen in eastern Congo that killed two other people.
Higher Education Minister Mashako Mamba had been visiting Congo's volatile east, which is home to a myriad of armed groups.
Authorities say they suspect a Rwandan Hutu militia was behind Saturday's attack on the minister's convoy in Rutshuru.
Armed gunmen blocked the road he was traveling on, then suddenly appeared out of the bush and opened fire. A police officer and a driver were killed.
The giant Central African nation was mired in civil war from 1996-2002, and the east remains awash in weapons and rebel groups who terrorize civilians. Activists say thousands of women have been raped here.
