Authorities in Venezuela say the director of a municipal police force and his son have been slain in the western part of the country.
Police in Zulia state say the police chief for a municipality near the city of Maracaibo and his son were shot by several attackers while in Maracaibo on Sunday.
Investigators believe the criminals began shooting during an attempt to steal the officer's vehicle.
Violent crime is one of Venezuela's most pressing problems. Police officers are occasionally among the victims.
