Ivory Coast begins questioning former strongman

An official in Ivory Coast says the arrested strongman has been questioned for the first time over human rights abuses committed while he was in power.

Prosecutor Simplice Kouadio Koffi says Laurent Gbagbo was questioned Saturday by judicial officials and that his French lawyers were not present. He says Gbagbo's French lawyers were turned away Friday for not having proper visas. He says Gbagbo's wife will be questioned Sunday.

Gbagbo's refusal to cede power after losing a November presidential poll sent the West African nation into a spiral of violence and chaos and left hundreds dead.

Gbagbo was arrested April 11 by forces loyal to President Alassane Ouattara, who took the oath of office on Friday.
