The Mexican navy says it has rescued 16 migrants whose boat sank in the Pacific Ocean off the Baja California coast near the coastal town of Rosarito.
Migrants have increasingly tried to sneak into the United States by sea, often in small rickety boats.
A navy statement Thursday says the migrants' boat apparently hit a buoy and sank. It says the 13 men and three women rescued Wednesday are all Mexican citizens.
The navy quoted the migrants as saying the smuggler who led them on the journey was picked up by another craft and fled following the accident, leaving his passengers abandoned and floating in the ocean.
