Afghan translator for US forces nabbed for bribery

The Afghan attorney general's office says it has arrested a translator for U.S. forces on allegations of taking bribes to help those who paid up get U.S. contracts.

The attorney general's office says in a statement issued Wednesday that the man was arrested while receiving $20,000. The money was an advance payment on $170,000 promised for helping a firm win a contract.

The suspect was arrested Tuesday at Camp Eggers _ a U.S. base in Kabul that oversees programs to train Afghan soldiers and police.

The statement did not provide further details, citing an ongoing investigation.

A spokesman for the international training mission, Lt. Col. David Simons, declined to comment immediately, saying he needed to gather more information on the incident.
