Tajik leader calls global terrorism a myth

The president of Tajikistan, which has been waging battle with a domestic insurgency for the past few years, says international terrorism is a myth invented by global superpowers.

Statements made Friday by President Emomali Rakhmon are likely to perplex even his own security officials, who have long spoken about the specter of Islamic terrorism and the danger of militancy spreading from neighboring Afghanistan.

Rakhmon, who has ruled his Central Asian nation with an iron fist for almost two decades, also warned of attempts by unspecified superpowers to extend the wave of unrest in the Middle East across the world.

Tajikistan backs the U.S.-led coalition effort in neighboring Afghanistan, but offers largely nominal logistical support.
