The U.S. ambassador to India says he is resigning from the post for personal reasons after serving two years _ as he warned the president he might.
Ambassador Timothy J. Roemer says that when he accepted the job he told President Barack Obama that he could only commit to it for two years. After that, he would put family considerations first.
Roemer started in July 2009 and will leave in June.
Roemer's announcement Thursday hailed the growth of the U.S. defense partnership with India. But the statement came on a day that the ambassador confirmed Indian media reports that two American fighter aircraft makers were out of the running for a multibillion-dollar contract for the Indian air force.
