Philippine security forces say they fought back communist rebels who attacked a police station in a southern coastal town, killing one insurgent and wounding another.
Army chief Lt. Gen. Arturo Ortiz says the fleeing rebels strafed a civilian vehicle during the two-hour gunfight at dawn Thursday. He says a woman driving the van was injured but three children traveling with her were unharmed.
Ortiz says one rebel was killed and another was wounded and captured by troops after the New People's Army guerrillas attacked the police station in Lianga in Surigao del Sur province.
The government and rebels have resumed talks on ending the decades-long Marxist insurgency but have not agreed on a truce.
