France's air accident investigation agency says an undersea search has found the chassis of the "black box" flight recorder from an Air France jetliner that crashed into the Atlantic Ocean almost two years ago.
The agency said, however, that the recorder itself was not found.
The Wednesday statement from the agency said that a Remora 6000 deep-sea craft made the discovery on its first dive, and a second dive is already under way.
Investigators hope that the black boxes will help determine what caused the June 1, 2009 crash of Flight 447 from Rio de Janeiro to Paris. All 228 people aboard were killed when the aircraft plunged into a remote area of the Atlantic during a thunderstorm.
The bulk of the wreckage was only recently discovered.
