A tour operator says suspected poachers stabbed to death an elephant that gave tourists rides at an eco-tourism park in central Vietnam.
The elephant was found Sunday with wounds on its rear legs some 5 kilometers (3 miles) from the park operated by Nam Qua Eco Tourism Co. in the central highland resort city of Dalat.
Director Phan Thi Hoa said the elephant's tusks were intact but poachers may not have time to remove them.
She said Tuesday the 38-year-old male elephant named Beckham attracted tourists eager to get their pictures taken or go on rides.
Vietnam is believed to have only 70 to 100 wild elephants left due to ivory hunting and deforestation.
