Small bomb hurled at officers in Northern Ireland

Police say a small improvised explosive device has been thrown at a police foot patrol in Northern Ireland, but the device caused no injuries.

Police said Wednesday the small, hand-held bomb exploded but none of the four officers on the neighborhood patrol in Craigavon, southwest of Belfast, were harmed.

No suspects were arrested for the midmorning attack, but police said an investigation was ongoing.

District Commander Alasdair Robinson called the attack "mindless," adding that "by sheer good fortune" no one was killed or seriously injured.

Earlier, police discovered a small but viable pipe bomb in Londonderry, Northern Ireland.
