An Australian teenager has pleaded guilty to fatally stabbing an Indian student in Melbourne. He faces up to life in prison for the attack that sparked outrage across India.
The 16-year-old pleaded guilty in Victorian Supreme Court on Wednesday to the murder and attempted armed robbery of Nitin Garg. Garg was killed last year while walking through a park in Melbourne, Australia's second largest city.
The court suppressed the teen's identity because he is a minor. He will return to court in June for a pre-sentence hearing
Garg's killing was one of several attacks in 2009 and early 2010 against Indian students in Melbourne. Some Indian news outlets claimed they were racially motivated.
Australian police said most of the attacks were ordinary crimes.
