Tajik authorities say government forces have killed at least 10 Islamist militants in the turbulent eastern Rasht Valley.
Interior Ministry chief of staff Ikrom Umarov Friday said heavy armored vehicles and aircraft took part in the military operation.
Local media citing security sources said militant leader Abdullo Rakhimov was among those killed in Thursday's raid, but Umarov said that information could not be confirmed. He said one police officer was wounded.
Authorities have accused militants led by Abdullo Rakhimov of conducting last year's ambush on a military convoy in which at least 25 soldiers were killed.
Thursday's operation would be a significant victory in the Tajik government's campaign to root out the relatively small force of militants based in the Central Asian nation's eastern provinces.
