German police have detained the head of a Berlin-based aid organization on suspicion of sexually abusing children and attempting to smuggle an 11-year-old boy from Haiti into the country.
Police in Bavaria said Friday they arrested the 57-year-old German already in February when he was caught trying to bring the boy into the country through Munich Airport on a forged passport, the news agency DAPD reported. Police did not make the case known for fear of jeopardizing their investigation.
They said the suspect has a record of sexual abuse.
They did not identify the organization, but said it was involved in projects to help street children in Haiti. The suspect had traveled to Haiti several times.
The boy was taken into protective custody.
