Venezuela's government is accusing the United States of protecting a former CIA agent from facing justice for a 1976 airliner bombing after he was acquitted in a perjury case in Texas.
The Venezuelan Foreign Ministry is calling the trial of 83-year-old Luis Posada Carriles in El Paso, Texas, an act of "theater" put on by U.S. authorities "to continue protecting the terrorist."
Venezuela wants to try Posada for planning the 1976 bombing of a Cuban airliner that killed 73 people.
In a statement released Friday, the Foreign Ministry also condemned the U.S. government's lack of action on its extradition request. It said the top U.S. diplomat in Caracas would be summoned on Monday to reiterate the demand that Posada be turned over for trial.
