A son of the former Philippine president has been charged with tax evasion in a move he has criticized as political harassment.
The internal revenue bureau said Thursday that House Rep. Juan Miguel "Mikey" Arroyo and his wife allegedly failed to pay 74 million pesos ($1.7 million) in taxes from 2004 to 2009.
The son of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo denied the charge and said it amounted to harassment.
It is the first time the government has filed charges against Arroyo's family. She stepped down in 2010 after nine years in power amid accusations of corruption and favoritism.
The younger Arroyo was elected to the House of Representatives as the leader of a party representing security guards.
