NATO focusing on humanitarian situation in Misrata

NATO says it is focusing its attention on the worsening humanitarian situation in the besieged western Libyan city of Misrata, the only major rebel-held city outside of its eastern enclave.

Spokeswoman Oana Lungescu said Thursday that the alliance's governing body, the North Atlantic Council, discussed the dire situation in the city with non-NATO partner nations taking part in the Libyan operation.

The council, consisting of envoys from all 28 allied nations, was also briefed on the ongoing air war and the maritime blockade designed to prevent Moammar Gadhafi's forces from obtaining arms from overseas.

NATO says it has flown 1,170 sorties over Libya since March 31, when it took control of the operation from a United States-led force.
