Police in Malawi say they responded with tear gas after protesting university students threw rocks at officers.
At least five students were arrested in Blantyre Wednesday. Turmoil has erupted on campuses around the country in the weeks since a senior police officer questioned a professor who reportedly led a classroom discussion of Arab revolutions _ and their possible implications for this southern African country.
Students and professors have protested, demanding the police and government respect academic freedom.
President Bingu wa Mutharika has responded by condemning "people who are teaching revolutions."
The international community has expressed increasing concern the government is restricting political and human rights in Malawi.
