Afghan security transition to start in 7 areas: Karzai

KABUL (Reuters) - Afghan President Hamid Karzai said on Tuesday seven areas, including a key city in a Taliban stronghold in the south, would be among the first to be transferred from NATO forces to Afghan control in July.

Karzai said the relatively peaceful provinces of Bamiyan and Panjshir, the western city of Herat, areas around the capital Kabul, part of Laghman province nearby and Mazar-i-Sharif in the north would be secured by Afghan forces alone from July.

The city of Lashkar Gah in volatile Helmand province in the south, long a stronghold of the Taliban, was included in the list.
