A Canadian judge has denied bail to a man accused of war crimes in Guatemala nearly 30 years ago.
The judge said Wednesday that Jorge Sosa would be a flight risk if he were released.
Sosa is wanted by Guatemalan authorities for allegedly participating in war crimes dating back to 1982, including the massacre of more than 250 adults and children. Sosa was the commanding officer at the time of a patrol that carried out the attacks.
He also faces extradition to the United States, where he is accused of lying on his application for citizenship by claiming he never committed any crimes and that he was not a member of a foreign military.
He was arrested in January while visiting family in Alberta.
Sosa is scheduled back in court April 20.
