Czech ex-president Vaclav Havel hospitalized

Officials say former Czech President Vaclav Havel has been hospitalized with respiratory problems.

Havel's aide Sabina Tancevova says Havel was taken to Prague's military hospital for treatment on Tuesday.

Havel on Monday canceled his scheduled for a week due to the illness and was supposed to be treated at home.

Hospital spokeswoman Jitka Zinke Havel says he was hospitalized due to an "acute respiratory infection." Zinke declined to give more details, but says the hospital may offer more information later Tuesday,

Havel has a history of respiratory problems dating back to his years in communist jails. He suffered from chronic bronchitis since a third of his right lung was removed in December 1996 following the discovery of a cancerous tumor.
