Lawyers: Alleged Zimbabwe plotters denied medicine

Lawyers for 45 Zimbabweans facing treason charges say police and prison authorities denied them medicine and treatment for injuries sustained during torture sessions in jail.

Attorney Alec Muchadehama said Monday no one in the group was given medical treatment, in defiance of a magistrate's order last week. Lawyers had said members of the group were tortured in jail. Treason carries a possible death sentence.

Police at first said 46 people were arrested, but court officials later confirmed a tally of 45.

A hearing scheduled for Monday was postponed.

The group led by a former lawmaker was arrested Feb. 19 for attending a lecture on North African anti-government protests and accused of plotting an Egyptian-style uprising in Zimbabwe. The group denies wrongdoing.
