Iran questions Senegal's break in diplomatic ties

Iran has called Senegal's decision to cut diplomatic ties illogical, a day after the West African country accused Tehran of trying to destabilize it.

Senegal said it would sever ties after an investigation showed that a seized Iranian arms shipment was intended for rebels fighting Senegalese troops. The shipment was discovered in Nigeria in October.

On Thursday, Iran's official IRNA news agency quoted the Foreign Ministry as saying it believed there were other unspecified factors behind Senegal's decision. It did not mention the weapons issue, which Iran has said before was a misunderstanding that had nothing to do with the government.

Senegal's foreign minister, Madicke Niang, said the country could not "maintain relations with a country that is working to destabilize it."
