NAME: Dilma Rousseff

BORN: December 14, 1947, in Belo Horizonte.

FAMILY: Her father was a Bulgarian immigrant and lawyer, her mother a Brazilian teacher.

EDUCATION: Graduated with a degree in economics from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul.

RESUME: During the 1964-85 military dictatorship, Rousseff was part of armed resistance movements. Denies taking part in any violent action. Arrested in 1970 and imprisoned for almost three years, underwent torture. Beginning in 1986, held various city and state government appointed posts. She was President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's energy minister from 2003-2005, then became his chief of staff. Stepped down earlier this year to run for president.
