The holy city is decked out in pink for Israel's first-ever race to support breast cancer awareness and research.
Five thousand participants are expected to run the four kilometer (2.5 mile) course Thursday through streets lined with pink banners and past Jerusalem's Old City walls, which have been lit in pink.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the Dallas-based organization sponsoring the event, organizes similar races in 141 world cities. Founder Nancy Brinker is in Israel for the race.
Organizers say breast cancer kills more Israeli women than any other disease.
Tamar Peretz, an oncologist at Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center in Jerusalem, says the high rate appears to be connected to environment, lifestyle and to a lesser extent, genetics.
