Tsunami recovery: numbers tell the tale

On Dec. 26, 2004, a massive undersea earthquake off Indonesia triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in 14 Asian and African countries.

The quake:

_ unleashed energy equivalent to 550 million Hiroshima atomic explosions;

_ left more than 1.7 million homeless;

_ caused damage estimated at $10 billion;

_ drew more than $13 billion in international aid. More than 700 groups aided reconstruction in Indonesia's Aceh province, the hardest-hit.

_ Deaths: 167,540, more than half the total;

_ Houses destroyed: 170,000;

_ Houses rebuilt: 140,000;

SRI LANKA

_ Deaths: 34,400;

_ Houses destroyed: 119,562;

_ Houses rebuilt: 112,543.

INDIA

_ Deaths: 14,627;

_ Houses destroyed or damaged: 85,000;

_ Houses rebuilt: 70,000

THAILAND

_ Deaths: 8,324;

_ Houses destroyed: 3,615; houses damaged: 3,209;

_ Houses rebuilt: More than 3,000.
