President Barack Obama says the Nobel Peace Prize has had "extraordinary power" to lift up those who would otherwise be forgotten.

At a dinner in Oslo following his acceptance of the prize Thursday, Obama spoke of the awarding of the prize to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., during the civil rights movement. He said the prize then had helped "put the wind behind the sails of a movement" that is largely responsible for the fact that he was in a position to be awarded the prize.

Obama told the gathering that all people can do their part to "make a just and lasting peace" _ and to create the kind of world they want to leave to their children and grandchildren.
