Troop contributions for Obama's Afghan surge

Key allied pledges to the NATO-led international force in Afghanistan, in addition to the deployment of 30,000 U.S. reinforcements announced by President Barack Obama.

Firm pledges are expected at a conference next Monday, and following the international conference on Afghanistan in January. NATO officials say they expect 20 nations to commit new troops.


In past week:

_Albania: 85.

_Georgia: up to 1,000.

_Macedonia: 80.

_Poland 600.


In past month:

_Britain: 500.

_Montenegro: 40.

_Slovakia: 250.

_South Korea: up to 500.

_Spain: 250.


Two countries have announced the withdrawal of their existing contingents in Afghanistan in 2010 and 2011:

_Canada: 2,800 soldiers.

_Netherlands: 2,100.
