British police have reached a compensation deal with the family of a Brazilian man who was shot dead by police after he was mistaken for a terrorist.

Both sides say the amount of the settlement will not be disclosed.

Jean Charles de Menezes was killed by police on July 22, 2005, when they were looking for terror suspects involved in an attack on the city's transit system the day before.

Paul Stephenson, London's police chief, and the Brazilian's family issued a joint statement Monday saying both sides are pleased that the litigation has been dropped and a settlement reached.

The family said the settlement package will allow them to move forward with their lives. Stephenson apologized again for the killing.
