How major US stock indexes fared on Monday

Stocks ended modestly higher Monday, nudging the Standard & Poor's 500 index and Dow Jones industrial average to record highs.

Technology stocks accounted for most of the gains. Health care stocks also rose, making up for losses in banks and industrial companies. Traders also had their eye on bitcoin futures on their first day of trading.

On Monday:

The S&P 500 index rose 8.49 points, or 0.3 percent, to 2,659.99, a record.

The Dow gained 56.87 points, or 0.2 percent, to 24,386.03, a record.

The Nasdaq composite added 35 points, or 0.5 percent, to 6,875.08.

The Russell 2000 index of smaller-company stocks slipped 1.88 points, or 0.1 percent, to 1,519.84.

For the year:

The S&P 500 is up 421.16 points, or 18.8 percent.

The Dow is up 4,623.43 points, or 23.4 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 1,491.96 points, or 27.7 percent.

The Russell 2000 is up 162.71 points, or 12 percent.
